PROGRAMMING NOTES

This version is based on the 1994 US National Tour Production.

This show is designed to be stick conducted although many productions have the Keyboard 1 player conduct from the keyboard. Just be aware that the lyrics and lines are not in the Keyboard 1 book and you would have to use the PC score. However, the PC score does not have the patch names and changes so you may have to write them in if you decide to conduct from the keys. There are 3 keyboards in this orchestration and all 3 books are still in the original handwritten format. All 3 books have programming with Keyboard 1 being the primary piano book with another 25 additional patches. Those include Strings, Horns, Synth sounds, Wurlitzer, and fun sounds such as Nosebert, Scrondge, and everyone’s favorite, the Electrofart. This book requires an advanced player.

Keyboard 2 has close to 50 different instruments and patches with many of those sounds being original synth creations. Besides the regular Guitar, Horns, Organ, Wurlitzer, Harpsichord, and various Percussion, there are some unique sounds such as the Fuck You Clarinet, Xylocaine, and Brassholes among others.

Keyboard 3 has around 40 different patches in the programming with instruments like Fender Rhodes, Strings, Pitched Percussion, Brass, Wurlitzer, and its own fun synth sounds like the Electroslap, the Pop Gun, and the Video Wipe.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Based on the iconic 1969 rock concept album, The Who’s Tommy is an exhilarating story of hope, healing and the human spirit. The story of the pinball-playing, deaf, dumb and blind boy who triumphs over his adversities has inspired, amazed and puzzled audiences for more than 40 years. This five-time Tony Award-winning musical was translated to the stage by theatrical wizard, Des McAnuff, into a high-energy, one-of-a-kind theatrical event.

After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother’s lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia and, as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he’s discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball and, when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he becomes an international pinball superstar.

The Who’s Tommy features an exhilarating score that is timeless in its youthful appeal, giving the show a cross-generational appeal that has made it a smash-hit in high schools and colleges around the world. A small rock band orchestration allows you to capture the excitement of the New York production on a modest budget.
