Percussion/MalletKat (Keyboard 4)
Roland SPD Drum Programming
$100.00 – $275.00
Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series! SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and all of Bikini Bottom face total annihilation—until a most unexpected hero rises to take center stage.
This licensed orchestration is based on the 2017 Original Broadway Production.
KeyboardTEK is proud to offer the Original Broadway Mainstage files as they are heard on the Original Broadway Cast Album. The keyboard programming and electronic music design was done by Randy Cohen and his team at Cohen Keyboards, LLC and through a special licensing agreement, these will be the standard rental files for this show. As will be the case with newer musicals that become available for secondary licensing, Spongebob has a lot of electronic music elements that are essential to the sound of the show and require a great deal of technology.
This version is orchestrated to be keyboard-conducted from the K3 book. This show has 2 dedicated keyboard books K1 & K3/Conductor, both with lots of programming. Keyboard 2 is part of the Guitar 3 book and there is also a Percussion programming (Keyboard 4 on the form below) that was done originally on a MalletKat book that can also be done on a 4th keyboard. In addition to all of this, there is also drum programming available that was originally done on a Roland SPD-SX that is played alongside the acoustic kit. The Foley-fish SFX were put together and created by KeyboardTEK and are part of the Percussion (Key 4) book. As per the Concord website, you are also encouraged to create your own if you wish or you can use ours where you see fit. They are provided as part of that programming at no additional charge. In the Original Broadway production, these were triggered by the percussionist using a custom Ableton file. The original Foley Fish SFX are not currently available for rent by anyone at the moment. We will update this page when they are available for rent.
Keyboard 1 is the primary piano book. It can be difficult in spots and will require a proficient player to navigate the part and the programming. Some of the sounds found in this book are various acoustic pianos, strings, synth elements (leads, pads, bass), brass, B3 organ, EP’s, mallet percussion, along with harp and celeste to name just a few.
Keyboard 2 is a hybrid book to be played by the Guitar 3 player. This means the player must play both keys and guitar pretty well in order to navigate this book. Most of the keyboard sounds in this book are strings, however, there is also accordion, B3 organ, woodwinds, brass, and some synth elements. This player must also play a steel string acoustic guitar live. This book has lots of moving parts and often switches between keyboard and guitar quickly so you will really need someone special for this chair who is very comfortable navigating the programming. If you have the players, you could split this book up but that means there will be long sections where one of those players is not doing anything.
Keyboard 3 is the conductor book. Due to the size of the orchestra and the intricacy of the score, there are many moments and many songs where the MD is only conducting the orchestra and not playing. However, there is plenty of programming throughout with sounds such as harp, piano, percussion, strings, synth leads, and even kazoo!
The Drum programming is delivered via a Roland SPD-SX digital file. KeyboardTEK does have several hardware units for rental if your production does not have one. Just email us to inquire about that. All of the SPD patches are indicated in the Drum book and are already programmed in the order that they appear. Like the keyboard programming, this file is the exact same one used in the Original Broadway production.
