PROGRAMMING NOTES

This licensed orchestration is based on the Original 2006 1st National Tour.

This show is orchestrated to be stick conducted from the podium and has 3 separate keyboard books, all with very dense programming.

All 3 books provide orchestral padding to the live players as well as various “medieval” sounds and fun SFX. Keyboard 1 is the primary piano book but there are also harpsichord, strings, harp, woodwinds, brass, mallet percussion, chimes, jaws harp, and some great animal SFX that your players and audience alike will love, and oh, lest we not forget, the fish slap. This book is not as difficult as some other musical Keyboard 1 books but does has its moments. It will require a fairly advanced player who is familiar with the musical theater style and who can navigate all of the programming.

Keyboard 2 contains lots of orchestral percussion, strings, harp, woodwinds, horns, recorder, mallet percussion, and everyone’s favorite patches, the Jug and Bass Kazoo. There are accordion patches in this book as well and all of them were designed to be played on a real accordion, however, KeyboardTEK has programmed a virtual accordion instrument in those spots in case the Keyboard 2 player does not play accordion or does not have access to one. Other than that, an advanced high school could easily navigate the part if they were comfortable with all of the programming.

Keyboard 3 is a new addition to the original Tour orchestration which is essential a string reduction. This is the primary strings book but is also optional IF you choose to purchase the optional string packet from Concord Theatricals. Be aware that the string parts are NOT included in the provided materials and will need to be purchased separately if you choose to use live string players. Otherwise, Keyboard 3 is your answer

From the TRW website: Optional Add On: Broadway String Packet available! (Violins 1, 2 & 3, Violas and Cellos.)  Contact your licensing representative for details.

**The orchestration for the licensed version of MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT contains a reduction of the Broadway string parts which are played by Keyboard 2 and Keyboard 3. If you choose to order the Broadway String Packet for your performance, you can either use the live strings as a replacement for the KEYBOARD 3 part or alongside it to enhance the string sound in your orchestra. However, should you choose to use the strings as a replacement for Keyboard 3, be aware that Keyboard 2 remains essential. In addition, please be advised that the Broadway String Packet is an additional item and therefore, the Piano/Conductor book contains cues for the Keyboard 2 and Keyboard 3 parts, but not for the individual string parts.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful showgirls? The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always look on the bright side of life.”
