PROGRAMMING NOTES

This version is based on the Original 2010 Broadway Production.

There are two keyboard parts in this orchestration, one is a Piano only book which the conductor plays from and the other is a heavily programmed Synth book. Since the synth book is the only electronic instrument in the entire orchestration, it is absolutely essential to the sound of Sondheim’s shows and to his musical legacy. Many of the patches we have recreated are iconic and instantly recognizable.

With over 350 patch changes in this single book, there are too many patches to name. Most of the sounds in the programming are synth based elements from pads to leads, bass to bells, with lots of electric piano sounds and percussion as well. This book will require an advanced player who can navigate the part and the programming, and despite the intense programming involved, it is a real treat to learn and play this book.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Hailed as a “revelatory revue full of wonderful moments” and a “funny, affectionate and revealing tribute to musical theater’s greatest living composer and lyricist,” Sondheim on Sondheim is an intimate portrait of the famed songwriter in his own words… and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, audiences get an inside look at the personal life and artistic process of famed composer, Stephen Sondheim.

His story. His inspiration. His genius. The tapestry of creativity that characterizes Stephen Sondheim remained largely undiscussed, especially by the man himself, until the creation of Sondheim on Sondheim. Ranging from the beloved to the obscure, the carefully selected two-dozen songs hang from a framework of in-depth video interviews, delving into Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process.

Far from the typical song cycle, Sondheim on Sondheim has massive theatrical potency, as well as inarguable staying power. The incomparable James Lapine brilliantly curated a collection of songs that have been masterfully arranged by David Loud. In addition, Sondheim on Sondheim’s multimedia facets make it equally at home on a Broadway-sized stage as it would be in a black box space.
