PROGRAMMING NOTES
This licensed orchestration is based on the 2016 Broadway Revival production.
Unlike the original licensed orchestration, the Broadway Revival was stick conducted from the podium although many theaters opt to have the MD conduct from the Keyboard 1 book. This show has a total of 2 keyboard books that are programmed.
Keyboard 1/Conductor is the primary piano book and can be played by the MD if they so choose to play and conduct from the keyboard. There are not a lot of unique instruments in the programming. Besides piano, there are quite a few instances of harp and a tack piano. This book is best played by an excellent player who can navigate the part and the programming while leading the band.
Keyboard 2 contains more of the orchestral padding in the programming. It is not a technically difficult book so an advanced high school player could likely play the book but it would be best to have someone with some experience using keyboard programming. This book contains electric pianos, brass, strings, mallet percussion, organ, accordion, harp, and even a koto to name a few.

SHOW DESCRIPTION
Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. Told almost entirely in song, the show follows Violet and Daisy’s progression from England to America, around the vaudeville circuit, and to Hollywood on the eve of their appearance in the 1932 movie Freaks.
With a completely reworked plot and new songs like “Very Well Connected,” “All in the Mind,” and “The Great Wedding Show,” the 2014 revival delves deeper into the backstory of the Hilton twins. With the implementation of the twins’ relationship with Harry Houdini and of a proposed separation surgery, the new book fleshes out characters and situations that endow the songs with more sophistication and truth.
