La Vie Boheme! Jonathan Larson’s iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love.
This version is based on the Original 1996 Broadway Production with cuts to some language and the removal of the song “Contact” to make this appropriate for schools to perform.
This small orchestration is the same as the full version and unique in that there are two keyboard parts in this show, the first being the Keyboard 1/Conductor and the second one is in the Guitar 2 book. In this 5 piece band, the MD plays the Piano/Conductor score from the keyboard. There is some programming in this book and it consists of about 20 individual instrument patches with less than 100 patch changes in the show. Some of the sounds include Organ, Strings, Fender Rhodes, Organ, Harp, Steel Drum, and a few fun Synth based elements. This book requires a strong rhythmic player capable of leading the band while playing.
The Guitar II/Keyboard Book obviously requires a guitarist who can play keyboard. There are less than 20 unique keyboard patches in addition to the guitar music and there are lots of rests and tacets in this book allowing the player plenty of time to go back and forth as needed. The keyboard parts are fairly basic and do not require an advanced player, but someone who can play piano and read well. The keyboard patch list includes Farfisa, Brass, Strings, Celeste, and Synth Pads to name a few.

Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent School Edition is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent School Edition follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
Rent School Edition is exuberant, passionate and joyous. Schools will love the freedom and flexibility that this show offers; minimal costuming and sets are required. This adaptation has been carefully done, working with the Larson estate to retain the dramatic intent of the groundbreaking rock musical, and consists of minimal changes to language and the removal of one song (“Contact”) to make it possible for many schools to perform this piece.
