PROGRAMMING NOTES
Ragtime 9 pc is a a recently revised orchestration (June 2022) which has 2 keyboard books but unlike the larger version, only Keyboard 2 has programming. Keyboard 1 is all piano. Both books will require exceptional pianists to play the part as they are difficult and require a knowledge of stride/ragtime piano styles. These books are very rewarding to learn and play.
Keyboard 1 can be played on a acoustic piano or a keyboard with a good piano sound. There are no additional sounds or patches in this part.
Keyboard 2 utilizes both acoustic piano and tack piano throughout as well as mallet percussion and even a calliope. Additional patches include orchestral woodwinds (flutes, clarinets, saxes, bassoon), brass (trumpets, trombones), and strings with various articulations among other sounds and instruments. I

Doctorow’s distinguished novel, Ragtime was the winner of the 1998 Tony Awards for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations, and both the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score, and has now been adapted for high school performers.
