Pippin (2014 Revival Version)
There’s magic to do when a prince learns the true meaning of glory, love and war in Stephen Schwartz’s iconic and unforgettable musical masterpiece.
This version is based on the 2013 Broadway Revival production as MTI no longer offers the original orchestration.
This show is designed to be conducted from the Keyboard 1 chair by the MD. As such, there are only about a dozen different instruments and patches with this primarily being the piano book. However, even with only about 30 patches in total, the sounds are iconic and germane to the score and the action on stage. These sounds include Piano, Tack Piano, Wurly, Calliope, Harmonium, Lute, Harp, and Bass Clarinet. This part requires a very strong player who can navigate the playing and programming while leading the band.
Keyboard 2 is much more heavily programmed with over 150 unique sounds and instruments and nearly 300 patch changes for the entire show. This book will require an advanced pianist that has experience and familiarity with playing heavily programmed shows. It is a very rewarding and fun book to play once you learn it. Examples of the sounds found in the programming are various brass and woodwind instruments, synth elements, organs, percussion, strings, guitar, harp, melotron, and everyone’s favorite, the Jew’s harp and Cat meow just to name a very few, although the bowed waterphone comes in a close second.

With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theatre giant, Stephen Schwartz, Pippin is the story of one young man’s journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this updated circus-inspired version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.
Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day.
