PROGRAMMING NOTES

This version is based on the 2014 US National Touring Production.

This show is designed to be stick conducted from the podium. There are 2 keyboard books in the orchestration both with various amounts of programming and patches.

Keyboard 1 is primarily piano and requires a really strong player. There are just a couple of additional sounds in this book such as harp but most of the patches are various acoustic piano sounds and a Honky-Tonk saloon piano. Most modern keyboards can easily handle these sounds so programming for this chair is completely optional, but if you would like the original MainStage file used in the Broadway production, the US National Tour, and the cast recording, it is available in the form below.

Unlike Key 1, Keyboard 2 is heavily programmed and contributes a lot of color to the orchestration. Most of the sounds in Keyboard 2 are orchestral instruments that cover everything from brass and woodwinds to strings and percussion. There is also harp, guitar, mallet percussion, and accordion throughout. Although not as technically difficult as Keyboard 1, an advanced high school player could navigate this book if they were strong rhythmically and comfortable with difficult key signatures.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

It’s time to carry the banner on your stage with Disney’s Newsies! Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.
