PROGRAMMING NOTES
This licensed orchestration is an amalgamation of several professional productions including the UK Tour but is not based on any single production.
This version is orchestrated to be stick conducted from the podium and has 3 keyboard books. All 3 books have keyboard programming.
Keyboard 1 is the primary piano book but also has other sounds and patches in the programming. Some of those sounds include acoustic pianos, electric pianos, horns, synth bass, and organ to name just a few. As for the these various keyboard patches, there are lots of moments in the score that call for the Keyboard 1 player to improvise over chords so this player should be comfortable doing that. This is not a technically difficult book to play compare to other Keyboard 1 musical theater books but it would be best to have someone who knows the show well and who has some experience playing shows with keyboard programming. Otherwise, an advanced high school player could navigate the part if they feel comfortable improvising.
Both Keyboard 2 and 3 have extensive programming that add orchestral padding depth to the live musicians. Both books could be managed by advanced high school players.

SHOW DESCRIPTION
What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.
The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.” A true global phenomenon and perfect pick for schools, community theaters and professionals alike, Superstar continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers.
