PROGRAMMING NOTES

This licensed orchestration is based on the 2019 Regional Production at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. It was originally workshopped and produced by TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA.

This show is orchestrated to be player-conducted from the Keyboard 1 book. There are 2 keyboards in this show both with programming although the programming for Key 1 is optional.

Keyboard 1 is the primary piano book. It will require a strong player who can navigate the part and programming while leading the small band. This orchestration was written to give the Music Director the option to play this part on the piano only with no programming or on a keyboard with the programming. Some of the sounds and patches in the programming are electric bass, various acoustic and electric guitars, strings, celeste, and bassoon to name a few.

Keyboard 2 is a combo book with keyboard programming and live percussion. The live instruments include shaker and suspended cymbal as well as orchestral mallets which are integrated into the programming if your player does not have access to the actual instrument. Some of the other sounds found in this programming include electric bass, orchestral woodwinds, strings with various articulations, brass, harp, various acoustic and electric guitars, and even a Parlor Organ.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Jane Austen’s adored heroine gets the musical treatment in Emma from acclaimed composer and lyricist Paul Gordon (Daddy Long LegsJane Eyre). For centuries, Emma Woodhouse has charmed and delighted readers – and now she does so onstage. With the option of setting the show either in the Regency Era or mid-century modern, Emma is truly a timeless tale of love, making mistakes, and holding yourself accountable.

A carefree woman, Emma Woodhouse has “the very best blessings of existence” with “very little to vex or distress me.” She is also a self-proclaimed matchmaker who thinks too highly of her abilities. When her attempts at matchmaking and romance go awry, Emma has to face herself and the people she has hurt.
